Use these professional Light Fixture Installation techniques to install a light fixture safely and effectively!

  • Step 1: Turn Off The Power

In the first step of Light Fixture Installation, locate the electrical panel and turn off the power. To protect yourself from electrical shocks, remove the old fixture and use a voltage tester to touch the wires. Power is off if the tester turns green, and on if it turns red.

  • Step 2: Remove Decorative Fixture Pieces

Remove components like shades, glass light covers, and bulbs from the fixture. Remove the exposed hardware, usually covered by a canopy plate. Remove the screw-fastened wiring. If the fixture is heavy, ask a friend for assistance.

  • Step 3: Remove Wiring

Remove plate and decorative elements, identify capped wiring with black, white, and green wires, test their attachment with a voltage tester, and carefully unscrew connectors or caps to detach fixture wiring from the ceiling. Consult a qualified electrician if wiring is unclear or uncapped.

  • Step 4: Removing Old Fixture

In the fourth step of Light Fixture Installation, disassemble an existing ceiling fixture by unscrewing screws or nuts, unplugging wires, and discarding old connectors. Disconnect the silver ground, white neutral, and black wires from a standard box. Keep house wires hanging and discard old connectors as they cannot be reused.

  • Step 5: Measure And Cut Wires

To install a ceiling-mounted light fixture, measure its hang height and ensure it is 30–34 inches above the table\’s top for a comfortable height for guests. Cut and strip the wires, leaving an additional eight to ten inches for later connection, and remove one inch of coating from each wire.

  • Step 6: Swap Hardware Plates

Go over the instructions that came with your new light fixture very carefully.  A hardware plate to replace the old one ought to have been included.  In order to reconnect the wires to your fixture, make sure you weave them through the new plate when you attach the new mounting bracket to your ceiling box.

  • Step 7: Connect Wires

Connect ceiling wires to fixtures using black wire to black wire and white wire to white wire. Attach the ceiling wire to the fixture wire, frayed threads, and cover with a cap. Connect the grounding screw or copper wire from the electrical box to the grounding wire, typically green. Connect the green wire to the copper wire if visible.

  • Step 8: Install And Assemble

To assemble the new light fixture, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. By following the fixture guidelines, fasten it to the screw collar, and then insert the electric wires through each additional link.  Make sure the fixture is firmly fastened to the light fixture by sliding any required components over the wiring and hanging chain.

Did you know?
70% of electrical fires are caused by faulty wiring or improper installations.
  • Step 9: Turn On The Electricity

Once the fixture has been assembled and installed, turn the power back on, and the lights ought to glow brightly.  Turn the circuit off again and go back to Step 7 if the lights don\’t turn on. This is probably because the two black or white wires aren\’t connected correctly.
